GMO Microorganisms

This is the oldest approach, and tangible results have been achieved since the early 1980s. Here are some examples: The synthesis of human insulin to treat diabetes, which was commercialized in 1982. Previously, diabetics had to resort to pig insulin extracted from the animal’s pancreas which, although very similar to human insulin, differs from it by an amino acid and could cause therapeutic accidents. Bacterial human insulin is synthesized by a widespread bacterium, Escherichia coli, genetically engineered to include the human gene coding for this hormone. This insulin, which is completely identical to that produced by the human body, considerably reduces the risk of allergy in patients.
